Resin Ocean Table Comission
Ocean Resin Table
Made by Ashleigh and Cameron
For Kathy
I thought that I would create a little blog on my website to share some of the other cool projects I do on the side for anyone that is interested!
Early this year, or it may have even been at the end of last year, I was asked by one of my mums friends to create an ocean resin table top for their bach! I love that a lot of my ocean style art creations make their way to places close to the beach - perfect really!
So it took us awhile to source wood large enough to meet the dimensions - and then my partner Cam put his wood working tools to good use. He cut the table down, created the smooth bevelled edges and sanded the top to perfection!
We have a bit of a running joke, I am very laid back (he would call it impatient) but I love to just get stuck in and create, so I tend to rush the processes along. However Cam is all about the prep!! So we make a great team because if it was left to me, there would definitely be corners cut - and not the right kind.
Cam then varnished the table - again, I left the prep work to him - and it turned out absolutely beautifully! See the before and after:
Then it was time to do the largest most nerve wrecking resin pour I had done so far! And there was no going back, it had taken Cam a lot of time to get the table ready for this stage!
So I set up my station, and it only JUST fit on to my tables in my art room, and I stirred my little heart out (the resin). Then I poured!! I can't even begin to tell you how nervous I felt, but once I poured it and got my heat gun to it, all was ok in the world. No one is allowed to be near me - I am fully in the zone. That may be a little dramatic but I guess I am..
SO ... here is what it looked like on my table right after pouring and moving the resin with my trusty heat gun:
You may have noticed that it looks like the resin spilled off my table, and thats because it did. I will forever have a resin blob on my rug but I'm ok with that - it was totally worth it!!
So for me, I was pretty happy. I do question everything I ever make and especially when it is specifically made for someone else - I am always worried they won't love it. And seeing it on my art table with resin blobs all around - it didn't do it justice for me.
But Kathy came and picked it up and she was pretty thrilled! Then of course lockdown and everything happened, so it was a while before they were able to get it set up.
Then the photos came through last week and I got to see it set up .. and it looks AMAZING!!!
I've even been told it has been christened with a few drinks and good friends and I couldn't be happier to hear that!!!
Thank you Kathy for the opportunity and I do hope you really really love it too!!
